Zenonesque is a subgenre of Progressive Psytrance that emerged in the mid-2000s. It is characterized by an experimental and unconventional approach, blending the atmospheric and polished production typical of Psytrance with funky and jazzy elements. This style often features acoustic sound design and playful melodies, alongside influences from 2000s techno, particularly Minimal Techno and Tech Trance.
The Zenonesque style first appeared in the works of an Australian producer associated with Zenon Records, whose debut album Blue Neevus inspired many emerging artists at the time. The term “Zenonesque” was coined by the head of the music distribution website Ektoplazm and quickly gained popularity among artists in the scene who identified with this distinctive sound.
Throughout the 2000s, Zenonesque grew in popularity beyond the Australian psytrance community, spreading to other regions, including Germany and Israel. Newer artists introduced diverse influences and styles, leading to subcategories that ranged from more mechanical and futuristic sounds to lighter, atmospheric interpretations.
