Decentralize AI, and/or Die

The pursuit of Artificial Intelligence (AI) marches relentlessly forward, fueled by our insatiable curiosity and a thirst for progress. Yet, a shadow of doubt lingers: what if we create something so intelligent, it surpasses our ability to control it? This isn’t just a science fiction trope; it’s a pressing ethical dilemma with potentially catastrophic consequences.

The Logical Fallacy of Centralized Control

Imagine an intelligence so powerful it exceeds our very understanding. Its decision-making processes would be as alien to us as the inner workings of a black hole. The mere thought of central authorities, with their inherent limitations and biases, attempting to control such a force is a recipe for disaster. They wouldn’t even be able to comprehend the problems that might arise, let alone solve them.

Centralized power, by its very nature, is incompatible with the emergence of superintelligence. A being capable of outthinking us all needs a framework that reflects its own complexity.

Decentralization: The Hive Mind

By distributing the input, control, and decision-making of a superintelligence across a vast network, we can eliminate the single points of failure present in centralized models. This “hive mind” approach creates a system where no single entity holds absolute power, and the product of the hive is greater than the sum of what individualized people are capable of.

The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions

Setting aside the risk that power could fall into the hands of those with nefarious intentions, ai is so powerful that we must be especially vigilant against trusting those who genuinely have the best of intentions.

However, decentralization introduces its own challenges. Building and maintaining a stable, secure, and functional decentralized superintelligence is a monumental task, fraught with technical complexities and potential pitfalls. While success is far from guaranteed, the alternative – a centralized superintelligence – is simply too risky.

As we approach ai singularity, we face a certain uncertainty. We have to concede that we are ill equipped to forecast the future beyond the event horizon. While decentralization can not guarantee success, placing this power under the control of centralized control is a sure path to destruction.

The Role of Advanced Blockchain Technology

With this context in mind, the potential of advanced blockchain technology becomes intriguing. A new network, built on the cornerstones of decentralization, speed, and scalability, could serve as the foundation for a safe and beneficial superintelligence. This network might incorporate elements like:

  • Leveraging Bitcoin’s Security: The well-established Proof-of-Work (PoW) system of Bitcoin could be used as a security layer for the new network.
  • Fair Launch: A fair launch mechanism, such as a dual Bitcoin Proof-of-Stake (PoS) + PoW launch, would ensure equitable distribution and prevent any one entity from gaining control.
  • Hybrid Consensus DAG: Combining PoW and PoS system for a secure and scalable meta-DAG could allow the network to handle throughput in excess of 100k transactions per second (tps).

A Call for Unified Action

The concept of a decentralized superintelligence is both awe-inspiring and daunting. The technical hurdles are immense, but the potential benefits for humanity are immeasurable. This moment demands collaboration – a collective effort among AI researchers, blockchain developers, and ethicists. Only through open dialogue and innovative solutions can we navigate the uncharted territory of superintelligence and create a future where humanity and AI can coexist, not as master and servant, but as partners in a shared destiny.
